I came home today from work to find a window fan in the kitchen. I noticed it wasnt blowing in any air. It was turned backwards so its blowing air outside. I asked my mom why the fan is reversed. She Says because she is blowing all the hot air from the kitchen outside. In my head im going wtf??? Correct me if im wrong but isnt it better blown In than out? and isnt Hot air better than NO air? i couldnt reason my point with her. I just said forget it and i went into my room with the air conditioner that i bought. Oh and My air conditioner is facing the RIGHT way if you were wondering lol.

Ok Maybe i need to add some more details here. My mom has a sheet blocking the kitchen off from other rooms she has an air conditioner in her room that cools the living room and her room The kitchen is CLOSED OFF from any other source of Air. And Yes. I pay the Electricity and Phone Bill For your information and i could understand using it that way to get fresher air quality and all but if there is no other air source flowing through the room then it isnt going to do much.

Long, long ago almost no one had air conditioning. We didn't. We would put the fan in backwards to pull hot air out of the house. We also cooked our food for the day before 9:00 a m and had a cold supper every night. If you turned the stove on, you would just make more heat. It was almost impossible to sleep in your wet with sweat bed and no one got any good rest.
How about sharing that refrigerated air with your poor old Mother?

There was nothing wrong with what your mother was doing just as long as there's air coming into the kitchen from elsewhere, even if that elsewhere is another part of the house. It's bound to be a bit cooler than the kitchen air. And don't forget - some folks are quite uncomfortable in any sort of draft, which of course a standard window fan will produce if it's blowing inward. Enjoy your a/c - but I bet your mom does not have one in her room - and I bet now you can figure out why...the air blowing on her would make her more uncomfortable.

So most of the time you would think you want the fan blowing outside air in. And you do. Your mom was not really blowing the air out. Hopefully she had other windows open and by putting the fan in backwards she was sucking the outside air in via the other open windows. This only works well if the fan is blowing out on high and the open windows are opened just enough to cause a breeze to be sucked in. You got to be able to feel a breeze for it to really do any good.
So your parents do know everything. LOL

The fan blowing out the window will draw cooler air from the other parts of the house into the kitchen.
BTW, you may have bought that air conditioner, but who is paying for the electricity to make it run?
Your Parents.
That's what makes them right.

Hate t break it to you, champ, but mom is right on this one.Blowing the hot air out of the room displaces the air quality significantly(did you stop sulking long enough to check?)And just for the record,Mom does know more tham you do,about a lot.let's face it,she didn't just jump out of closet the day you were born, she actually had a life and probably went through alot of the same things you're going through now.Be a mensh and give it a rest!TL

In the first place, reversing a fan allows the warm air to be blown out and cooler air coming in from another window, think about it Pal.
So what if you pay the bills, how much did it cost her to get you this far with your "stinking thinking" she is your mom or have you forgotten they story about the "stork" and umbilical cord?

Your Mom is correct. When it is hot and humid out you don't want to suck the warm air into your home. You want to keep it out and by reversing the fan that is how you accomplish that.
Air conditioners are obviously different. You already knew that, right !!?
No offense but parents are experienced and do know lots of things !!

Parents have seen it all! You may never understand their logic, until you are a parent and in their shoes. Well, if you got an air conditioner, then you shouldnt worry about which way the fan is facing, correct?

If it is a displacement type fan. Then it can be faced any direction. In direct response to how you wanted the air movement to go.
It just depends on the situation.
