I reinstalled windows xp on a used dell dimension I bought on ebay. After installing windows, I could not connect to the internet. This could be a dumb question but I don't claim to be computer savy by any means. Do I need to install a network card? If there is a place on the back of the tower to connect an ether net cable, does that mean it has an integrated network card? I tried to set up a connection with the install wizard but I get no where! "Computers 101 for dummies" anyone?

I have a connection on the back of the tower for the ether net cable and when I hook it up to the cable modem, the orange light blinks. I know the cable internet works cuz I'm using it now with my laptop from work.

I went to dell's website and entered my service tab number to find the original configuration. It didn't say anything about a network card, but it did say something about a data fax modem.

how do I know which driver to download? I've already been there looking for drivers and there are like over 60 of them.

The probable cause is that the motherboard drivers are not loaded. If you don't have the driver disk, you can get the drivers at the Dell web site.

Check what windows says about your network interfaces. Be sure your internet connection is physically connected (eg plug the cable in). Click start and right click on "My Network Places". Choose "Properties". Look for an entry named "Local Area Connection" or "Lan or High Speed Internet". If you can't find anything similarly named, you may need to install drivers. If you do, look for a red x or an error message listed next to the icon.
