I have a small fish bowl without a filter. What are all the kinds of fish that can live in it? I know betta fish can live in it, but I don't want them. Gold fish can live without filters, but the amoena in their poop will kill them in such a small bowl. What besides a betta or goldfish can live in a small bowl without a filter, or heater, or anything? Thanks.

No fish can live in such a small space. The problem with Goldfish isn't the amonia, it is that Goldfish get 8+ inches long. Bettas can live in a small bowl, but they will constantly stressed and will not live long. Get a 5 gallon, heated and filtered tank and keep 4 White Cloud Minnows. Even that is a really small space for fish.

Plants. Most fish (other than labrynth, lungfish, and a few others) need airation or at least constant surface agitation to breathe. Goldfish cannot breathe without surface agitation, which is one of the reasons why they often are seen at the surface of a bowl, gasping. There are a few small gouramis out there, but I still don't recommend not using a filter. So you are stuck with a betta. You could set up a 10 gallon planted tank with no filter and still be able to keep a couple of very small fish or shrimp.

Nunyz is completely correct (whoever gave her a thumbdown IS an idiot). The proof is in the pudding! Put a betta in a little bowl with no heat or filtration. Put another betta in a real, 5 gallon tank with heat and filtration. The one in the tank will live much longer, have fewer health issues, be more colourful and more active. A large bowl, even, is inadequate (but of course better than a small bowl!). Like all fish, bettas need clean water. They need filtration, and they NEED heat (80F, just like the water they are from in the wild). A 5 gallon tank with heat and filter is a perfect set up for a betta fish, and your betta will prove it to you.

if you are getting a fish for a bowl your best bet is a very small fish any fish you get will "poop" and create amonia and they will also need air. however you dont nessisarly need a filter as long as you change the water frequently. your best bet is investing about 10 - 20 dollars for one of those 2 gallon tanks that come with mini filters air and some come with more accessories that way your now constantly takeing care of a fish and it will have a 80% longer life than it would in a bowl!!!

Fish can't live in a bowl, no not even bettas, it's a myth, they might survive for a while in a bowl but they can't live happily in one. It's as simple as this, if you can't properly care for a pet, don't buy one.

I don't think you understand how having fish works, the ammonia will kill them yes...that's why you let the ammonia spike WITHOUT fish (fishless cycling), then your nitrite forms and eats the ammonia (nitrite is just as bad as ammonia), then nitrate forms and eats the ammonia and nitrite (nitrate in low levels is harmless and benificial, you NEED it). Then you can add your fish to a healthy envirement, you need to do weekly water changes to keep the nitrate levels, your ammonia and nitrite levels should be 0. Even trace amounts will be harmful, the goldfish might be able to survive small amounts but why would you want your pet to live in a envirement where he is basically being tortured 24/7? Imagine someone was putting small amounts of teargas in your house 24/7 and you had to breath it, you couldn't leave your house or open a window, you just had to breath it, that's what your gonna do to your fish.

As i've said, if you can't care for a fish, don't buy one. They aren't insects, they are smart creatures capable of learning (yes they can be taught tricks believe it or not) and forming their own decisions based on past experiences, and they feel pain. If your gonna do something...do it right. Doing it half assed will only leave you dissapointed and with a dead fish.
