It's used for Saddleseat riding, which is common with Saddlebreds, Morgans, Arabians, and a few other breeds. It's a type of english riding that emphasizes very animated gaits and high head sets.

It is NOT a dressage saddle. It may look similar but there are significant differences.

That would be a cut-back or saddleseat saddle. It is NOT a dressage saddle just because the flaps are long. You have to look at more than just that. You can see that it has a 'cut-back' pommel, it's usually about 4 inches to accomodate for thet horse's high neck and withers. Before I switched to saddleseat my balance wasn't that great and then when I switched to jumping I discovered that my balance was a lot better. These saddles may be a little difficult to balance in at first b/c they do place you 'behind the motion' and once you figure it out they aren't that difficult to ride in. It doesn't havee any knee rolls because you're supposed to grip with your thighs (If you can do that, you can stay on anything, believe me! lol) and that also helps your balance.

This is not an uncomfortable saddle if you know how to ride in one, but if you dont' know what you're doing and don't have the proper positioning it might not wrk out too well.

Hope that answers your question!

It's a Saddle Seat saddle.
Saddle seat saddles have a cutback pommel to make room for the horses withers, and are placed so that the flap sits behind the shoulder and the seat is horizontal on the horse’s back. Riders carry their hands much higher than other styles of riding; in order to achieve the proper balance in accordance with the high head set desired in the show ring. Saddle seat show horses may be specially shod by farriers to complement their brilliant movement.

Saddle Seat was developed as a style of riding "gaited" horses in order to show them off to their greatest advantage. "Gaited" horses include such breeds as American Saddlebreds, Tennessee Walking Horses, and Rocky or Kentucky Mountain Horses. Arabians and Morgans can also be ridden in the saddle seat style.

Saddle seat riding and the breeds associated with it were for the most part, developed in the United States by plantation farmers; the horses and method of riding them had to be comfortable enough to spend hours in the saddle overseeing plantations, but also showy enough to take to town. Over the years, Saddle Seat has evolved as the best way to compete with those breeds of horses as well as proving to be a comfortable way to ride at any time.

Saddle seat competition is divided into divisions which can be outlined by rider age, horse age and experience, the number of gaits performed (either three gaits or five) or such designations as Open or Pleasure. The different breeds have their own distinct divisions. Arabians can show as Park, English Pleasure or Country English Pleasure. Morgans can show as Park, English Pleasure or Classic Pleasure. Saddlebreds can show as Five-Gaited, Three-Gaited, Show Pleasure or Country Pleasure. Tennessee Walkers can show as Plantation Pleasure or Performance.

It isn't a dressage saddle, it is a cut back saddle used for saddle seat. Saddle seat is common in breeds like arabs, and morgans. I have almost that exact same saddle right now.

It's saddleseat... probably the most uncomfortable saddle I ever sat in. My feet were way in front of me and it was so hard to post. Unless your horse does English Pleasure, I dont not recommend buying this saddle without knowing what its use is.
