Kept moving the bowl because her cats wanted to eat it. Found one cat hovering a couple of times so we sat it on the toilet bowl in the bathroom during the day. Moved it out at night. Water was ok. Any ideas? Fear? Movement? Boy do we feel bad about this.

Why did it die? Because things like this always happen. It's Murphy's law. Seriously...you never really know how old a goldfish is when you buy it. It could have been old and just happened to die during this week. If the cats pestered it while you were caring for it, they probably pestered it when the owners were home too...so I really doubt that caused it. I think it was just one of those things. They aren't easy to keep in a bowl anyway. They give off ammonia so frequent water changes are necessary, and in a small bowl...it concentrates quickly. I know you feel bad, but it was most likely...REALLY not your fault.

Two reasons. Water pollution. They are in a small tank, with only limited filtering and water changes. When you dump in too much food, either they can't eat it all, or they eat it and make heaps of fish poop. Either way, the water get polluted, and the fish die. Second reason, fancy goldfish have deformed and compressed bodies. This makes them prone to constipation, and that messes with their swim bladder, and they start floating around upside down, not a good look for a fish. Now if you had a BIG tank, or even better a pond, and good filtering, you can feed common goldfish a heap of food, they will eat it, and grow huge. But in a small aquarium that most people keep then in, it's easy to dump in too much food, mess up the water quality, and the fish die. Ian

It was in a bowl! That is why it died. Did you do a water test for ammonia? If not, how can you say the water was fine? Goldfish should be kept in large (55 gallons or more) aquariums with a power filter. If your friend gave you the goldfish in a bowl, then don't feel bad. It is your friend's fault for being ignorant about basic proper goldfish care.

It wasn't your fault, it was the owner's fault. You cannot keep fish alive in a small bowl! Goldfish get 8+ inches long and a 6 inch wide bowl kills it withing a month (usually, some last longer). Let the fish's owner know they are killing their fish in tiny bowls.

Keeping goldfish in bowls kills them.
Slowly, so that you think everything is OK at first, only to have them drop dead.

Each goldfish needs 12 gallons all to itself.

I'm serious!
The gills don't work right (they can't breathe) in any less water. Also they produce a lot of waste.

It's nothing you did.
They need a tank with a filter.

Don't believe me?

bowl+goldfish=dead fish

it was likely nothing you did. goldfish are very dirty fish that need big tanks and heavy filtration. a bowl of water simply cannot sustain them. plus it stunts their growth and you end up with a two inch fish with 6 inch fish organs. hopefully its owner will learn from this.

first of all, the fish was in a fishbowl, which is too small for a goldfish. also it's not good to keep moving the fishbowl around, as this will incur stress to the fish.

i believe that's why it died.

Fish just die for no reason that can be explained. I wouldn't worry about it, I'm sure your friends won't either. If you are, go buy another one that looks the same, no one would ever notice.

It could've just been it's time. It seems like you did well with taking care of it, but sometimes you just know. Either way, you should probably call the person who owned the fish right away. And you might want to offer to buy them a new fish.
