When discussing pay rate for building trades, most people speak in terms of what the unionized work force is making. Although each trade makes a different amount of $ per hour which goes directly on their pay check, there are many other financial benefits to consider when determining who makes more. This is considered the total package of wages and benefits. Some trades, and it varies by region, give up benefits such as a better health plan that includes drugs, glasses, dental, retirees medical; or a generous retirement package infavor of my money directly on their check. So when someone says they make $30 per hour, that is typically the money on their check but perhaps their total package is $39 per hour that includes all their benefits. The next guy may make $28 per hour but his benefit package is much higher and his total hourly package could be $45 per hour. This can vary in both directions. So don't be misled by only asking about the wage portion of what one of these trades people make. You may be missing out on a much larger total package that would save you in the long run by supply you with health care versus you paying on your own or having to save more on your own to make up the difference for your retirement.

I am an electrician, my dad was a sheetmetal worker. He told me when it was apparent that I was getting into the building trades, to be an electrician because in his view it was a far better trade to get into which would allow me to use more mental skills than manual skills. As for a plummer, well...don't bite your finger nails was the advise I herd them tell their apprentices.

I am an offshore electrician and we are responsible for maintaining the A/C systems on the rig. We are paid about 4 times what an HVAC technician makes on land and about 2-3 times what an experienced electrician make in an industrial environment. HVAC backgrounds are a definite plus when applying for an electrical position offshore. And I just work 6 weeks out of a year.

I work for the City of Los Angeles, right now the Electricians make about 1 dollar more an hour than HVAC, and Plumbers make 1 dollar less than HVAC, Now if you get into a specialized field within HVAC you can make very good money, it depends how far into it you want to get, I Work in a high rise in dowtown for one of the city departments and am making way above union scale, dont forget, building automation controls is a specialized field that will get you great money, it just depends how far you take it.

it varies from state to state and whether or not it's a union contractor, the question you should be asking is which trade has the most work available and/or needs workers the most.I'm a union sheet metal hvac guy in Minnesota, make over36$ per hour however at least 100 guys are on the bench(however about 25% are voluntarily the other trades are in the same situation here which is really not so bad

To answer your question, it all depends on if they work for themselves or someone else. I'll tell you that I was in the HVAC field for about 6 years and I made 26.00 an hour when I worked for AirTron, but when I started my own company I charged by the job and made (after overhead) around an average of 60.00 an hour. All in the DFW Metroplex
