We've grown some sweet corn this year in our garden. We were wondering if there is any fool proof way of knowing when it is ready to pick besides pulling the husk back and looking?

I grew up with gardens of sweet corn. The tassle on the very top of the stalk will turn dark, as will the tassles on the tips of the ear of corn. (also called silks) The more fully dark it is, the better. Also, grasp the ear of corn firmly. You should be able to tell from a firm squeeze if the corn is ready. It will feel firm and full. If it feels like there is quite a bit of room still beneath the husk, then it will not be ready. Possibly the kernels didn't develop properly, or only halfway up the cob. These could still be good, just cut the cob in half and eat only the part that matured.
It shouldn't take long before you are a pro at determing from a look if corn is ready or not.

When the corn silk starts to droop then it's time to pick. A great way to freeze corn is to throw it into the freezer corn husks and all....!

Corn is pretty consistant grower. Check your seed packet and if it says 85 days to maturity, then you can be fairly confident that it'll be ready within a couple of days either way of that date.

the best way is tasting it,if it is sweet enough for you then pick it and enjoy your labor
