the denotation of "crocodile tears" means the actual meaning. so that would mean a crocodile's tears, BUT crocodiles do not cry, so this literal meaning is false.

the connotation of "crocodile tears" means the implied meaning. that means that since crocodiles don't cry, if someone is crying "crocodile tears," he/she is pretending to be sad or trying to gain the listener's sympathy.

sunnymommy's explanation was good, except that she mixed the meaning of connotation and denotation :)

To cry crocodile tears implies that the grief is false or pretended.

They don't have tear ducts but have secretions to keep their eyes moist. When they try to swallow something too large for them to eat then a watery liquid oozes from their eyes.

There is an old myth that suggests that crocs moan and sigh to allure travelers within their reach and shed tears over their prey when devouring it.
