Yes in freezing areas...

No anywhere else...

"Tom: In places like Minneapolis, where the label on your long underwear freezes to the top part of your butt in the winter, it makes sense to let the car idle for a minute or two. In sub-freezing temperatures, an engine may stall unless it's given an opportunity to run briefly before you impose a load on it.

Ray: But in more southern climates (like Iowa, for example) warming up the car may not be necessary. And in fact, all you're doing when you warm it up under those conditions is wasting gasoline and creating pollution... "

I would never let my car worm up .....that would be awful. But it is best to let it "warm" up in cold weather before you drive off because the oil gets cold and you need to let it warm up so that it properly coats the engine components before driving off ....your car's engine will have a longer life.

When you ever start a car with the advent of 5W-30 motor oil which pump's to the lifters and valve train last (crank and rods see oil pressure within two seconds first) there's absolutely no reason to ever warm an engine up even in the dead of winter. Idling promotes gasoline piston cylinder wash down and excessive formation of condensation. I don't expect you to take my word for it. Call any oil company on their 800 number and ask them.

It is better to give the engine a minute or two to get lubed up.If you let it run for a long time you will just be adding wear and wasting fuel.

Really it's pointless to leave your car running for more than 30 seconds. All it really does it pollute the environment and waste gas.
