Nice pictures. To set your mind at rest, it's not any kind of dangerous spider. It's one of the Fishing spiders that have gone terrestrial and started thinking they were Wolf Spiders. The genus is Dolomedes, I think this one is scriptus, but it might be tenebrosus; it's been a while since I had some as pets. They make great pets, by the way. And yes, they do get rather large. The biggest one I ever saw (in Maryland) was as big across as my hand - something on the order of 8" leg-tip to tip. They will bite if they feel threatened, but I used to live every summer in a tent with at least a couple of these guys and was only bit once in 8 years when one crawled on me in my sleep. Like a pin poke, with a bit of redness afterward - nowhere near as bad as a paper wasp sting, let alone a yellowjacket.

Looks to be a Brown Recluse (or some kind of recluse)...I wouldn't touch it if I were you can cause necrosis..which means it will eat your flesh if it bites you (the poison that is.) I could be wrong, but if it doesn't have the violin shape on the back of it's upper abdomen it's not a recluse.

Maine you said? Ok..it's not a recluse. Way to high up for a Recluse.

Here check this out to find out what type it is:

I've seen one of these, too, only with a 5 inch legspan. Wondering what it was myself, but for some reason I thought it was an orb weaver of some type. But, because it was hunting, that would be the possibility of next to nothing.

Oh, and the spider is not dangerous. I know the dangerous species of NA, even though I don't know this one's. Black widow, brown recluse, and funnel weavers supposedly are the three dangerous NA species, funnel weaver to a much smaller degree.

Huntsman Spider probably. It's harmless.
In general, spiders that you can see walking around are harmless. Its the ones you cant see that are under old furniture or in Crawlspaces that are harmful.
