The first number is the tread width in millimeters (265mm=10.43 inches)
The second number is the sidewall height, as a percentage of the width. So a 25 would be 25% of 10.43 inches, which equals 2.60 inches from the wheel bead to the ground
The last number is the diameter of the wheel....
So this tire would be 10.43 inches wide, 25.2 inches tall, and be on a 20" wheel...
divide by 25.4 to swap mm to inches, and multiply by 25.4 to swap inches to mm

The first number refers to the section width, that is, the width of the tire (not necessarily the width of the tread), when it is mounted on the width(s) of wheel for which the tire was designed, and is specified in millimeters. The second number, immediately after the slash, indicates the aspect ratio. It is expressed in percent, which compares the height of the tire's sidewall to the width (when you hear the term 'low-profile', think low aspect ratio, which means a short sidewall). The last number is the easy one, it is the diameter of wheel that the tire fits, and the standard measurement is in inches. When shopping for a wheel/tire combination, keep in mind that, all other things being equal, that the outside diameter of the wheel/tire is the overriding factor, and needs to be kept as close as possible to stock. If you increase the wheel diameter from the original size, a lower aspect ratio tire is required (this is referred to as 'plus sizing'). A lower-profile tire usually increases road noise.

Means it will fit a 94 Chevy for one thing. 15 refers to rim size. R means it's a radial, probably steel belted. 205 and 65 refer to the size and width of the tire. 205 indicates the tire's section width, in millimeters. 65 indicates the aspect ratio (ratio between the height from the road to the wheel rim, to its width section), sometimes called the profile. P indicates passenger vehicle. There should be other numbers giving the load range and speed rating of the tire, usually expressed as a number followed by a letter of the alphabet, and the maximum pressure in pounds per square inch.

265/25-20 this would mean the tire mounts on a 20 inch wheel.the 265 means the tire is 265 milimeters wide.the 25 means the tire is 25 percent of its width tall than the wheel.

Go to teglerizer.com or buicks.net. I punched in "tire size explanation" and picked these websites at random. Lots of info...

the numbers are just the height and width of the tires, and the profile of them, that's all the numbers mean ,it helps to identify them that and they also have a rating number on them, that rates them for speed and traction, good luck ,hope this helps.

This has to do with the required amount of pressure in the tire and how big the wheels are.
