Like the people above said, change the exponent, but use the second number:
5*10-3 becomes 0.5*10-2 (you're dividing 5 by 10 and multiplying 10-2 by 10, so overall it's still the same number)

Now add, and get 7.6*10-2.

Notice that this is already in the proper scientific notation (i.e. number between 1 and 10 times 10 to some power)

the correct scientific notation is 7.1^(10-2) + 5^(10-3)
the 10 and 2 after the 7 were exponents, right?

Uniformity of exponent on 10 will do
Change 7.1*10-2 into 71*10-3.

Now you can add that to 5*10-3

And get 76*10-3 as your answer

Its easy to do if the exponents are the same.

So let's change 7.1*10-2 into 71*10-3.

Now you can add that to 5*10-3 and get 76*10-3 as your answer
