Don't get a Pleco! The Common Pleco gets 2 feet long and they are the ugliest fish ever created! Instead, get 4 Corrys. They will do a better job and stay small (about 2 inches). Get 5 Angels to start. If after 3 months, they are still doing okay, you could add 2 more so you would total at 7 Angels and 4 Corrys. Don't overstock, it will cause the Angels to become violent and they will get stressed. Good luck!
Just read some posts, there is no rule that says 1 fish per 10 gallons (or, at least not a good rule). Does that mean you would put a Neon Tetra that is 1.5 inches in a 12 gallon tank by itself? Or put an 18 inch Oscar in a 12 gallon tank? No, just not logical. In a 40 gallon tank, 18 inches high, you are going to max the tank space out at 7 Angelfish. Make sure you provide plenty of tall plants for hiding spaces (live or fake works, live is always better for the fish though).

Angels are one of the few fish that like height as opposed to length in a tank (discus are another!). They will fare will in 18" depth, but would prefer 24" or deeper. They should be kept one angel per tank or more than 3. Let's not forget: they are CICHLIDS and will get territorial and confrontational especially if spawning.
If you're planning on moving them up to a 55 gallon tank, you could stock with up to 6. They can grow up to 12" tall...some even taller. They are compatible with both plecos and corydoras. Word to the wise though: you will be better suited to grab a few more corys as they are a schooling fish: at least 4 and 6 if you can manage it :)

I would say 2 with a max of 4 angels.
If you have been keeping fish a long time and keep up on your cleaning and water you could do 8.
But if your just starting out no more than 4.
angel fish get big as adults.

Personally I would start out with 3-4 angels, and see how they are doing before getting any more
Hope that helps

I have a 20 gallon tank with two full grown angelfish and there is still some room. They are a mated pair and are laying eggs.I think you should start out with 2 or 3 and go from there once they are full grown.

I recommend 3 to 4 since they get up to 6inches each.
This also depends on the pleco being 1foot to 2foot
if you get one that is 6inchs then i would say 3-5
Have fun

rule of thumb usually is 1 fish to each 10 gallons (I believe)..reason being you don't want to overstock your tank. because you have to keep the ph level in line. If your ph level gets out of whack the you can lose some fish. The ph usually gets thrown off or tests high because of the waste from the fish (poops and pee) so...the more fish you have..the more waste you have, the greater the chance of the ph getting out of whack. Always have a ph indicator test kit on hand. Your level should be in the neighborhood of blue...yellow is BAD and fish could die. I love angels fish good luck with your tank :o)

You can start off with about 6-8 juvi's and then remove them as they pair off and start causing problems until you just have a pair, or maybe two if you decorate the tank well.
