The current welfare system is not. Currently, there are no "steps" to improving your position. There is no consideration for the fact that being employed costs money, so once you get a job, you can't afford the same "lifestyle" you get on Welfare.

Also, there are no consequences for doing stupid things -- like getting pregnant without being able to provide for another child. Or getting fired because you were too lazy to show up for work on time every day. So the people who start to get off say "I tried" when they really didn't try hard at all.

No. It raises our taxes, making business less profitable, and many people take advantage of the handouts they get from the gov't. They won't get a job because they are never forced to get one. People should help one another voluntarily. Christian people, by the Bible's definition of the word, will do that. Non-Christians may or may not.

Probably without the Christian influence on this culture, people in general would care little if anything at all for the poor. For evidence, just look at the Untouchables in India or the drastic poverty in other nations, like Africa, while the rulers live in luxury because they pocket the foreign aid that Western nations send them. It's the Christian missionaries that help the most with poverty.

Also, Christians understand that you're not supposed to depend on the gov't to pay your bills for you. When the gov't helps in this way, what they're doing in effect, is enslaving the population. Communist countries give everyone a job from the gov't and the gov't tries to support everyone. Since the gov't can't create wealth, everyone, except the ruling elite, is poor. And the goods and services produced by the gov't are notoriously ineffective, in part because the gov't has no competition. Notice, the best thing the gov't does is create a powerful military. That's because there are other countries in the world that the gov't might have to fight with. Thus, competition makes it better. I heard in A. P. Gov't/Pol. class that the Soviet Union once made all lefty shoes. A communist economy doesn't work very well. China is doing well because they are slowly becoming more capitalist in nature. I hope that when they do become the richest nation in the world, because they probably will, that their gov't will be more tolerant, like ours.

It's a start but not good enough...It gives the poverty stricken just enough assistance to lock them into poverty. For instance, I knew someone living on welfare about a couple of miles outside of town...no transportation. They wanted to get a job but couldn't because they had no transportation...they wanted transportation but couldn't get it because they had no job...viscious cycle...a catch-22. They were thus locked into a system that gave them just enough money a month to survive on but not enough to live on.

Also, when you get welfare or public assistance, there are so many rules it is almost impossible to break out of it...For instance, you receive your govt. check which isn't enough to last the month so you want to work to have more money...but...you can make only so much or the govt. check will be reduced or stopped & your job to supplement your income is then just not enough either. So they (a lot of them) just simply give up...just simply stop trying...or worse yet, go into prostitution or some other unlawful behavior because they have to survive or die.

I could go on & on but the bottom line is: Govt. aid is designed to keep people in poverty...almost impossible to break out of. I grew up in a middle upper-class family & I was not aware of all this. When I did find out how it works...or doesn't work as the case may be, I was furious. We live in one of the richest countries of the world with some of the most intelligent people of the world...& we can't solve our own problem of poverty !!!

Gimme a break...May God help us...litterally.

Well it hasn't worked so far. There are more poor people right now than there were when the U.S. came up with a war on poverty and established a welfare system.

The cure for poverty is wealth. Wealth is created by productive people, not freeloaders sitting around waiting for a handout. Before anything can be re-distributed it has to be produced.

You get what you pay for. If you are willing to pay people, (in food, money or any other valuable item) for nothing then thats what you're going to get, nothing. Instead of being productive and producing valuable goods they are going to sit around and produce nothing. Eventually thats all you'll have to re-distribute, Nothing. Just like in Zimbabwe.

No, education is the answer. Do you really help someone out by making them dependent on the government for their existence? I think not. Someone who builds them self up, learns a new skill and is able to support them self is a happy person. Welfare should only be a TEMPORARY solution to poverty. Anyone receiving welfare should be required to go to school whether it be high school, college, a vocational school or business school, anything just work on making it by yourself.

Well it has not worked very good in the way it is set up in this country. Education is the cure and most poor can't afford it. I believe we would be better off to offer training in certain fields or schooling in certain fields and we proably need a better drug interdiction program to get the drug addicts cleaned up and then trained. If people have no skills and no money and they are hooked on drugs they will have to have some help but I don't think we should just be sending them a check to stay out of sight. We do need good leadership to solve this and many problems this country has.

it is not a good answer to the problem but being on welfare where I live you are made to get a job and they have classes to teach you skills and how to budget your money so you can make it on your own. How sad it is that people think the govt or someone else should support there lazy butts!

Welfare isn't meant to be an answer, it's a stepping stone toward enabling one to regain themselves from a bad situation or help someone develop skills and education, it's not a long term solution but it is necessary, it also enables the working poor to meet basic housing and food needs

No. Workfare is a better idea. Getting money for doing nothing is never a good idea. It's better to have them sweeping sidewalks get paid for it than to just give them money for being lazy.
