K you mentioned Small Business so is he self employed. If so Family comes first, and he is working to provide for the family no work equals no money, no money equals no food, home, or TV. So actually its because of the family he must work, and if its self employed it may seem that much harder but its not like he can just go start another business or just get another job. He loves you Hun other wise he wouldn't be working that hard.

Isn't this a question that should be discussed and agreed upon by your family? Discuss and then compromise.
We have 3 businesses that we AGREED to start together. We discuss all major decisions as a family and decide when it's appropriate to put work or family first. Some days business is more important b/c it feeds and takes care of the family, somedays family is more important b/c without it there would be no need for the business.

You have to work to survive. So, there has to be a balance between family and work. It would really depend on the circumstances as to which one would take priority. If someone was sick of course family would come first. Maybe you could sit down with your wife, figure out the problem and come up with some sort of compromise. Best wishes.

What should've come first is a mutual understanding of any and all aspects of their lives.
Marriage is a team effort. Period. They should be on the same page with everything in their lives. Some things are going to take priority at different times.
Through all things there must be a meeting and agreeing of them both.

I believe that a wife/family should always come first, but that a wife should support her husband 100% on his work/small business. If not for that work/small business, he would not be able to provide for/or help to provide for his family. Not to mention that a husband/wife should always support each other in any endeavor/s they pursue.

Considering you asked "in a marriage" then it seems obvious that your wife and family would come first... I mean.. In what case of marriage would you put work before your family???

Family. That is the most important relationship to maintain....work comes and goes...businesses open and close....families need nurturing to grow.
Always think what would be worse: having a business fail or having your marriage fail?

Are you asking this because you are married to a work-a-holic? Just a guess, because I'm married to one. Being self-employed, he sometimes gets his priorities mixed up a bit. But he is hardworking and I am thankful for that. He could spend his nights at the bars, but comes home to me instead. Like one of the others said, it needs to be a balance between priorities.

Family, but remember, you need that job to care for your family. Wisdom is knowing when and how to draw boundries, and at times, it may come in the form of leaving a demanding job to care for family, or a cut in pay to spend more time with them. Balance.
