Coragryph is right. You have the right to represent yourself as your own attorney under the constitution but it is sometimes not advisable especially in a trial unless you are smart enough not to post this kind of question.

No, in much the same way that you don't need a surgeon to remove your appendix.

You can do it yourself, it's just likely to be very messy, and you probably won't like the end result.
