The link below should explain it - except that the forerunners of the Israelis, called Zionists, began moving there in the late 1800s, when the region was still under the rule of the Ottomans. The Ottoman Empire (Turkey) was on the losing side in World War One, hence the British and French were in a position to carve up their empire in the early 1920s.

Well, you could open your Collier's World Atlas and Gazetteer of 1939 to page 100. There it is between Transjordan and the Mediterranean. Don't have that one handy? Ok, open your Rand McNally Cosmopolitan World Atlas of 1956 to page 30. There it still is.

Considering Israel has been exactly where it is right now for the last 3300 years and there has not been any mention of a palestine until the Romans conquered Israel and renamed it palestine (unofficially), there are no true maps that will have it on them.

Lots of maps of Palestine here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine#British_Mandate_.281920.E2.80.931948.29 - where it was in 1920, and what was planned by the UN for the formation of Israel. Anyone who says Palestine didn't exist is just denying history.
