Let's just make sure we don't have universal health care.

there are so many ways to reform medicine other than universal health care. The two tier system that some people are trying to push in canada where government and private system work together to guarentee more health care and shorter wait lines. Also another way is to partially have government involved in health care, like for unemployed for a certain amount of months or certain groups being subsidized for health care. THere is also health savings account proposed by bush where u can put money into accounts that wont be subjected to taxes. There are so many ways to reform health care. But a bigger crisis is the prescription drug prices that are not usually addressed when talking about health care. And I think instead of rhetoric more attention should be payed upon research and spending time by congress on what actually is the best way rather than fighting about it.

The biggest obstacle to reform is the insurance companies. They have been boasting to their shareholders that they're earning billions of dollars a year in profits. If that money was plowed back into the system, our costs wouldn't be so outrageous.
We don't need to reinvent the wheel. Every modern nation but ours has universal health care. And they all do it the same way. People pay taxes to the government and the government provides health care. Nobody gets rich, but nobody dies for lack of access.
Of course the insurance comapnies are going to fight like anything to prevent this. They will donate millions to any politician who opposes it. They will buy ads on every network calling anyone who supports health care reform a communist. They will even tell us that reform will end up denying people care, and conjure up scary scenarios like hospitals closing.
It will be interesting to see if the American people are smart enough to see through it.

We know socialized medicine does not work do we? 36 better health systems in the world than the US - all with government involvement in healthcare, all costing significantly less than US healthcare.
It looks like a pure medicine for profit system is what does not work.

We could do things which would prevent our people from getting so sick. For example, deteriorating sewer systems in our older cities cause serious diseases, but often the cause is not recognized. Fixing the infrastructure is expensive, but not as expensive as taking care of people with diseases like hepatitis, cancer, etc.
Also, it would be useful to educate people to take care of minor health problems themselves. They should not be discouraged from taking responsibility. We shouldn't have to hear "ask your doctor" over and over again.
