The great thing about buying a used BMW is of course you wouldn't need to bear the initial depreciation of the car.

The bad thing is that at 5 - 6 years, even if the car was well maintained, there are components of the car that would be nearing the end of its service life. And the repairs/replacement cost would be on you.

Go in with your eyes opened, expect to pay for some additional work. Go through the service history with the previous owner.

Look at the chart on page 7 and figure out how much maintenance was neglected or how much you need to pay for these maintenance...

Pros-classic e39 styling absolute bargain prices (got our m5 with a litlle under 30 k for 46k)
Cons- It may be hard to find a nicely maintained e39 but if u do make sure u run it through a carfax so u will no all the service done to the car etc etc
i agree with Jim C. We had a 98 528i for about six years and had no issues with it at all. The only reason we sold it is because we got a 2001 m5. The only problem we have had with the m5 is the clutch, we got it with ~30k so we changed it and after that it was worry free. Another error is the SES (Service Engine Soon) light. came on car was running fine. got a Peake code reader which analyzes the error and made it go away. other than that my experiences with the E39 models have been bliss. Hope this helps

As a former BMW tech I can tell you that the E39 5 series BMW was one of the most trouble free models BMW has ever made. The maintenence is expensive. Some common failures include, radiator, expansion tank, thermostat, cam sensors, occasionally water pumps, thrust arm bushings, rear ball joints, window regulators. It may seem like a lot, but compared to many BMW models it isn't bad at all. The bonus on this vehicle is these parts seem to fail much more rarely than on others. Hope this helps.

First thing you should know it that it's a BIMMER, beemers are motorcycles. Older BMWs are way better than the 2007 models anyway.
