Secretary of State Seward purchased Alaska from the Russians in 1867 for $7,200,000. The press at the time also called it "Walrussia" and "Icebergia". Seward stuck to his guns, however, and named his acquisition Alaska, from the root word Alakshah, which means "Great Country" in the Aleut language.
