Adultery is when you are married and you betray your spouse. It can include physical adultery, which is sleeping around, or emotional adultery, which is having a friend (email, pen pal, work pal, whatever) of the opposite sex that is closer to you than your spouse. You cannot have an intimate friendship with someone of the opposite sex and still maintain a healthy marriage. Even if you aren't interested romantically in your friend, it will hurt your marriage and erode your spouse's trust and self-confidence. I also consider looking at porn adultery, because you are lusting after those women instead of being satisfied with your wife, but most people don't think porn is as horrible as I think it is.

The definition of adultery varies widely by state.
In New York, an adulterer is defined as:
"A person who engages in sexual intercourse with another person at a time when he has a living spouse, or the other person has a living spouse."
And in North Carolina, adultery is:
"When any man and woman lewdly and lasciviously associate, bed and cohabit together."
And in Minnesota:
"When a married woman has sexual intercourse with a man other than her husband, whether married or not, both are guilty of adultery."

Its called, adultery. It is when a spouse cheats on their spouse, which in turn is called an affair if it continues. doesn't make a difference whether it is the wife or the husband. It is one of the commandments the Lord gave us to live by. "thou shalt not commit adultery"

Specifically speaking, adultery is a term used by the judeo-christian cult to enforce a specific moral action. If you chose to be a christian, this would be a moral standard that you would be expected to live by. Personally, I am glad I am not a christian.
