hey, everyone i'm beginning to lifeguard again, and i'm going to work at this pool where theres a bunch of little kids who think they are tough and there all a bunch of smart asses.
How should i deal with them?
could i yell at them? talk to them quietly? threaten them to get kicked out of the pool?

First time - verbal warning

Second time - whistle and verbal warning so everyone hears/sees (they tend to not like that)

Third time - I go over and talk to them face-to-face. Ask them if they understand what you are saying, ask them to repeat it. Tell them that if they abuse the rules again you will have them ejected.

Fourth offense - STICK TO YOUR GUNS!!! Tell them to leave and not come back until they can follow the rules. (Or have the head guard/manager do this if that's how your pool is set up) Escort them to the gate/locker room and make sure they leave.

Alot of times they don't believe you will actually make them leave so just be sure to be firm, stick to your guns and be authoritative. I find that yelling never really solves anything but that talkiung to them and trying to be nice usually gets them to stop. Also, explain why you have the rules you have. Make sure they understand. If they still can't follow the rules then it';s your job to get rid of them to ensure the safety of others. In the end, it's your pool and your rules, remember that.

Good luck!

For me I'm the biggest b*tch when I'm lifeguarding. I hate kids who think they can get away with anything. I deal with them like this: first time they do something wrong I let them know, second time they'll end up getting yelled at (most of the time because it's from across the pool lol) and the third time they're out. If they come to the pool often I usually have a time out system where if they break the rules they have to sit out for 5 minutes and then they can go back in. Some people really end up hating me because I tend to be quite strict but I'd rather yell at a kid than have to run in to get them because they did something stupid. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!!!

Be calm but firm. Put them out of the pool until they can follow the rules. DOn't let them intimidate you.

I see those kinds of kids at the water park all of the time. I feel so sorry for the lifeguards who have to deal with them.

If you make them get out of the pool and sit/stand by the side every single time, they will soon learn.

Good luck.

One warning telling them with respect why that is not allowed and if they do it again, they are out of the pool for a few minutes....firmness with no abuse.
