If I have to travel to take someone to small claims court in California, can I recover my travel expenses as well as court costs?

depends on the case and the judge. it doesn't hurt to put in the costs of your trip into what you are trying to recover. the judge will determine if he/she will award you for that cost. but your entire judgement can't exceed the states allowable cap for civil court.

i think i remember the limit being $2500 total for small claims. You can add the itemized cost of court and travel expenses, but you'll only get that IF you win the case. Otherwise you'll be paying THEIR court costs. Which sucks.

No. It was your decission to take legal advice and in any event the small claims court will not generally issue a costs order (except where certain criteria are filled).
