is there a way to pass such ideals on, or does each individual have to discover them for themselves?!?!? is there a way of preserving rationality in a world dominated by religion and machismo?

I think it's something that's developed over the last 70 years or so. Roosevelt had to do something to deal with the depression, but getting past a short term crisis has turned into a habit. People have come to expect the government to handle every problem they have and people in government have encouraged that concept.

Republicans are no exception. Nixon's presidency was a milestone in growth of federal government. Under him, federal government handed out grants to states that met federal standards and denied grants to states that didn't. In one sense, it leveled conditions across the country so education and health in the lowest tax states didn't resemble third world countries, but it also created a lever for the federal government to affect a lot more trivial issues (national 55 mph speed limit, national drinking age, etc).

You mention a world dominated by religion, but they're just one group that has realized how influencing federal government policies can be an effective tool to nationalizing their own interests.

I'm not sure there's a definite way out. Europeans are a lot more willing to sacrifice personal freedoms for security and I think the US is headed the same direction.

Because in order to have Freedom you need to protect it and to free a country from Dictatorship it can be precieved as Dictatorship because your occuping a country. Fear is a weapon of war and eventualy war is needed to be waged to protect Freedom. Reason playes a part for without reason there wouldnt be fear and fearing something shows concern toward what you fear and that is protecting freedom.

They can be passed on, if we teach our children to think rationally, not jump to conclusions, be moderate and actually consider other perspectives before forming opinions.

Sadly, very few people seem willing to put the time and effort into doing that themselves, let alone setting a role model for their kids.

They don't. Sometimes freedom and reason kick the *** of fear and dictatorship. Well, freedom, anyway, reason isn't much for ***-kick'n.
