For just a file server load Ubuntu Linux with Samba. Ubuntu is a free download and works on just about any ol machine you might have around. Windows, Mac, Linux, will all work fine with that setup.

If it were me I would load the server version, much more secure and stable although the desktop version will also work just fine.

It depends on what you want to do with the server. If its just sharing out files. any server can suffice if it has tcp/ip capabilities. Now if you want to centrally control group policies then Windows server or Novell will do the trick. If you are really worried about viruses use a unix or linux server. The Unix/Linux if you have the knowledge cost less as well. Linux/Unix does not require as much computing power as the other two.and you can download free copies

a working laptop or laptop is barely as previous through fact the appliance you run on it, i exploit a p3 900mhz with 256mb ram, and its working a 5 month previous version of Xubuntu like it became a clean laptop, macs i dont understand a lot approximately yet rather this finished "laptop getting older" difficulty is completely a merchandising strategies-set, if all of us is confident their device is ineffective then theyll bypass purchase a clean laptop, most of the subject concerns on older structures are literally led to by making use of the OS nicely-called residing house windows. It after a on an identical time as will become volatile, information bypass corrupt inflicting consistent errors messages, yet rather in terms of hardware an element is gonna run purely as good from the day its made til the day some area of it shorts and it stops working, as for some macs (and laptops) they're too compact, and insufficiently cooled so hardware does actually start to degrade

A server compatible with all types of computers can be a windows 2k3 enterprise edition for being most most simplest than any other operating system and it's easy setup, simple to understand .
but for powerful or somewhat difficult to use Linux can be preferred
