The other is Hell , was the book written by a philosopher before 40-50 years and where he has tried to prove that any body other than you is Hell because your expectations of happiness from the other will give you pain when not fulfilled... and then the Other is Hell . is proved right...
But life is like that only as long as you are on this planet.... you will live with others only and you will need their help in large or small quantity..
No man is island .. man can not survive if he lives by his own volition. except that he is gone dead...
so the other is hell not a right in our social context .. but it is right in the way for those who are cotemplating spirituality .. where he is not supposed to expect any favours or help but here also some become insensitive and dead to the feelings if they take the statement so grossly..
so do not be so overwhelemed by the statement other is hell. but enjoy the other such that how much the heaven is hidden this Hell.. and enjoy that moment of heaven from this Hell.
this will change the whole gestalt...
Life will be different.

Jean Paul Sartre needed some positive thinking coarses. Hell is what you perceive it to be. No one else can be hell. They may try steer you in that direction, but it's entirely up to you which way you decide to go.
I think the complete separation from love would be hell. So in my opinion there are people on earth now who have chosen hell as a way of life due to misleading or hurt by others and isolated themselves away from the possibility of accepting loved again... sad - like the French!

I think a terrible way to view this would be to assume that he means all other people are hell. That is, I don't think that he is suggesting that being around other people is the worst thing that could ever happen. I think it is suggesting that people have the propensity to inflict the most possible amount of harm merely through social interaction. Not physical torture, and not even intentional emotional torture, just that human relationships are potentially tortuous by virtue.... I'm sort of assuming you've read Huis Clos (in camera, no exit, depending on where you live.) .....
The point, I suppose, is that we spend our lives worrying about the more obvious catastrophes of life and fail to realize that the worst possible circumstance lies in the person closest to us.
I used to love this quote, and I still do. However, recently I've been thinking that it denies the concept of personal responsibility a little too conveniently.......
There's much more to be said about this, these are just some quick thoughts...

Jean Paul Sartre was on to something. I have heard of an American politician [sorry cannot remember his name] who said something very similar, in that, "all my problems are caused by other people."
There is a lot of truth in both of the above.
When I am alone, as I am now, in command of my dreams and aspirations, I am happy and content. When I am in company there is strife, argument, debate and often discord, which leads to much stress and an abandonment of my dreams and thoughts.

I disagree, I do not think hell is other people, I think hell is a perception of a persons mind, a negative displacement in the mind, Hell might be then the way people perceive other people in a negative state of mind. I do not beleive in Hell, but I do know that some people make their life on this earth a living Hell because they have too many negative charges in their mind.

Inasmuch as you may identify those undesireable traits of yourself in others. Hell is ultimately to me only that which CAN be identified. You cannot be tortured by that which cannot be imagined or postulated. So, similarly to the way you can immediately dislike someone or something on impulse, so too can you sense that in other people which is hellish and or heavenly by contrast.

NO, I don't agree with that because "hell" is a perception. People's experiences are created by their thoughts and perceptions; this is fact, as evidenced by the famous movie, "The Secret." If people believe in bad things and negative acts, they attract/create their own hell. It has nothing to do with other people.

Sartre,,, Being a secular existentialist, was referring to the fact that; each individual must be responsible for their own actions... Therefore, heaven or hell its what each one of us makes on this earth, for ourselves and for others.
