It depends on the individual. Some cops actually do put their lives on the line everyday and are good cops, while others are corrupt and don't really "serve and protect" like they are supposed to. Teachers are the same way, some want to actually help students to learn and grow, while others are there to basically babysit and collect their check. Pro athletes are also the same, some actually love the game they play, while others have the skill, they just don't have the heart and passion for what they do, they just see the big checks. You can tell who the athletes are, they usually don't last long if they have no love and are just in it for the money.

If they were paid a top salary they would still strike, they would still complain and they would still piss and moan just like pro athletes do now.
Honestly teachers and police officers need a good salary but one that is fare and doesn't take away for the love of teaching. One thing I know is that any teacher who enters intio teaching is smart enough to know that it is not a huge salary. They chose a career they love not for the money but for the love of teaching and wanting to help others.
If teaching paid better more people would seek teaching positions not for the love but for the almighty buck.
As far as a fair balance its hard for me to say. With school taxes as high as they are I can't honestly say I can afford to pay them anymore. It would be cool though if the business community showed appreciation by giving them discounts to make it cheaper for them to live.
And for the record I think teachers should be tested on what they teach. They should know the material better then anyone else and any teacher who can't pass the testing should be evaluated and re-educated.
Common sense has to kick in sooner or later and what worries me more then anything else is a teacher who gives many tests to your kids and expects them to pass but fights to make sure that their not tested.....makes you think doesnt it!!

I think professional atheletes are overpaid and teachers, police, firefighters and the military are underpaid. Unfortunately we will never see a change in this discrepency because people would much rather attend a sports event than put money toward schools and service institutions (i.e. pay taxes)

I think they deserve a lot better pay than they are getting. Pay amount is not what I respect them for, I respect them for doing jobs that are important even though the pay stinks. No, I would not think they are overpaid.

Only if it gave them a pro-athlete's ego. We can only afford to deal with the giant egos of a small percentage of people. Since there are fewer athletes than teachers and cops, we have no choice but to overpay the professional athletes.

Cops and teachers are the most disrespectable professions of Planet Earth. The only teachers that have it made are college professors. I don't understand why people who are public school teachers would do that job. They have degrees, why not be a freelance writer, scientist, or stock-broker. You would make much more money and have more respect.

Absolutely not (to both of your questions). They are public servants and deserve to have the highest paying jobs. Most pro athletes are uneducated people who do not even appreciate the gifts given to them. I do believe there are exeptions to that rule though. Actors the same way. Why do we place people in the entertainment business in such high regard we do not "appreciate" those who really make a difference in our world.

Athletes get paid what they do because of supply and demand. I'm not saying its right but the laws of supply and demand warrant their high pay. If cops are teachers got paid what athletes did the streets would have freaking Robocop and Stephen Hawking would be teaching your kids.

I've been teaching for almost 20 years and love my job....kids are different today...but so is society. Would I like the paycheck of Shaq...yes, but I don't think the dollar signs would change the way my kids or their parents treat me and I know that it wouldn't change the work that I do.

only if their names were Mike Tyson and Darrell Strawberry... and no, never overpaid... you can't pay them too much for what they do and what their responsibilities are compared to the average worker.
