Socialism can mean anything from welfare state liberalism to Communism. You're going to need to be more specific.

Assuming you mean the former, it has a number of benefits. Socialism means better public services, better schools and hospitals, less poverty, less crime, and a better overall standard of life. It does mean that it's harder to become extremely rich.

Socialism is an economic system, not a political one. Strictly speaking, it is the ownership by the state of means of production and distribution. That fact does make it inseperable, by definition, from the political-but they do deal with seperate areas.
Democracy is simply rule of the people by the people.

In practice, tere are no "pure" democracies--all democratic systems delegate authority to representatives elected by the people. If you think about it, there's no inherant conflict--a socialist system can be democratic (as are Sweden, India, and France). That is NOT the case with Communism--which cannot by definition be a democracy.

There are no pure socialist systems either. Sweden has a large industrial sector that is privately owned, for instance. And even nominallly non-socialist economies like the US do have socialist elements--the ownership and operation of the roads and highways in the US is almost entirely a government enterprise, for example.

Usually, people focus not on the "production" aspect of socialism (possibly because this is where socialism does very poorly compared to capitalism; you can't really compare socialism to democracy--thats comparing apples to oranges) but on the "distribution" side. Here is where socialism has some idvantages (v. capitalism). It generally eliminates a god deal of problems with things like access to health care and education. Otherwise, the cheif advantage is highly conditional: a limited socialist element can serve to counter market failures. That's the case with the US road system I mentioned. Despite strenuous efforts, no one ever came up with a structure that would enable private owners to profitably provide the transportation system anindustrial economy HAD to have--so it ende up a government owned industry.

Other than those two points, socialism has few advantages. Nominally it is more sympathetic to organized labor/workers' rights. But there's little historical evidence that labor has all that much more power inc ountries like France than in countries like theUS.

There are different degrees of socialism, social democracies like Western Europe today have more freedoms than we do in many ways, but you won't believe me, so just ask Europeans if they think we are freer than they are.
The old East Block Socialism of the USSR and E.Europe
were strictly conservative on social issues: they controlled the arts and media, homosexuality was illegal, abortion was illegal, and there was strict military control of the people .they weren't allowed to leave their country. So that was like a prison, the money and investments ran out, and only the inside elites of the party enjoyed prosperity. Others just got by, had free school but couldn't do anything with it, had free medical care but a shortage of supplies, so everything fell apart.
So there needs to be a balance. A government can't chase away all the rich, or else the country would be a basketcase.
But if a rich country lets the poor population grow without helping their children, the country can really spin out of control and you have a place like Brazil in its worst regards.
A social democracy like Canada or Germany or Holland are my ideals of democracy. They're not headed towards a totalitarian system. It's just silly fools who think that keeping some social safety nets in place will somehow lead us into a Stalinist--style Communism. It's all cigar smoke.
Calling all democrats socialists is a scare tactic of the cons.

Capitalism is truly the exclusive possession of the flexibility of shape. in truly reality a guy or woman or employer owns the factories and mines and buys hard paintings from people to paintings those. Fascists evaluate that the state could desire to hold comprehensive administration and only by ability of way of govt control, could a rustic attain independence and supremacy. Fascists have faith social courses are basic and tend to be very contained in the direction of minorities. This is more than one can answer here. You're asking a question that can only be answered by essays and documentations. You'll have to look these up and do some research for there are no short and definite answers.

PSU840... I think you are in error on the socialist view of religion. You would be well advised to do some research along these lines.

Socialism is a political and economic model that promotes govt ownership of key industries and resources.

Democracy is a political model where the people have the ultimate power to make decisions, whether directly by referendum or indirectly through elected officials.

Democracy can function just as well in a socialist (govt ownership) economic model as a capitalist (free ownership) model. One has nothing to do with the other.

Socialism has an advantage in that everybody gets a fair share. No one person is worth more than another.

Personally I think it would be impossible to have socialism, because one of the main proponents of socialism is that every one is equal, meaning no god, therefore no religion. Most of America is very religious.

There are governments that are socialist and democratic. They do not work well. Oh yeah, and you will have to pay about double the taxes you are paying now, while getting half the wage.

if the democrats took over, we would not be socialists. The United States would be more socialist and look more like europe. Government funded healthcare or health insurance, better schools, less crime, higher taxes, and less military spending.
