Possibly on the Chicago city website. If not go to city offices. They will have all info. Permits pulled. many times a blueprint of the building. Who built it and dates, title and who has owned it over the years. some interesting information available there. Have fun

You might try the book "Chicago In and Around The Loop" by Gerald Wolfe - it details a lot of the history of older buildings in the area. Or, you could try contacting the Chicago Architecture Foundation at (312) 922-3432.

There are a few ways. You could contact the Chicago Architecture Foundation (http://www.architecture.org/) and ask them.
You could go on one of the Archtecture foundation walking tours (http://www.architecture.org/tours.aspx)
You could check with the Landmark Preservation Council (http://archfilms.com/tour/map.html)
You could check out the WTTW/Ch./ 11 shows by Geoffrey Baer who hosts shows on the station about local architecture. I think you can buy some of the tapes (http://www.wttw.com:81/main.taf?p=1,9).
Or you could hit the library and do some research on the specific building you want info on.
