I sort of know what kind of things to prepare for but it would be great to receive some more brilliant ideas. How should I prepare and where do I start?

See if the company you want to work for has a website or has online applications. Send a resume to the HR department of the company, make sure the resume says that you want to relocate. I did this many years ago...I lived in Missouri but wanted to move to SF. After applying online and sending my resume, then I did a phone interview. Eventually I was invited for an in-person interview, so I flew out to SF. I was offered the job and requested that my start date be four weeks out. Then I went back home, gave my 2 weeks notice at my old job and started packing up my stuff. The hardest part is trying to find an apartment in a city you don't live in! I found my apartment online, but made sure it was a month to month lease (just in case the apartment didn't live up to it's description and photos!!)

I am actually in that same position myself and this is what I've thought of: First, why don't you check the want ads of the local paper in the city where you want to move to. Most papers are online, so you can check out what jobs are available. If you see something you might be interested, give them a call and see if it might be something you would be interested enough to go check out in person, which you will probably have to do once just to meet the people in charge of hiring. However, it would be worth it if you could find something you would want before moving. Also, depending on the field(s) you are interested in, how about having a head hunter/recruiter or a placement agency help you out? They can put your resume out there for you and let you know of any leads. Good luck!

Apply on any of the major jobs sites and tell them you are willing to relocate. Or state in the description that you are moving to a new state. Then prepare for the interview by having several example stories that illustrate team work, flexibility, etc. And practice, practice, practice.

What kind of job? Are you a doctor? Do you want to work in a Starbucks? Do you have a specialized degree or field you want to work in?

In demand jobs (nursing, engineering, healthcare for housebound seniors, etc...) don't have as much of a problem. If you want to work in a record store or be a bartender though.... you're SOL.
