My mechanic said it was because the timing belt had to stretch or become accustom to the engine. is he giving me a load of BS or could this be a legit reason?

the timing belt doesnt need to stretch or come accustomed to the car. it is the size it is for a reason. the timing could be slightly off. sounds like that mechanic has a hard time doing his job correctly. my thought, take it to a different shop with a good reputation. so since you now told us what kind of car it is. its not supposed to idle rough. you need to have the timing checked out. it sounds like its slightly off.

3 things, either the belt is off by a tooth or 2 or your eng is an interference type and has a bent valve. Or there is another running problem not related to belt. The belt wearing in line is not right.

sounds like he didn't get the timing set correctly... take it back and tell him to check it.... or take it to another shop to have it checked.... they may charge you, but they should tell you if there is a problem.
