The El Camino, in its various styles and forms has always fascinated me. I am curious as to what caused production to stop on this car. Please, serious answers, no smart a.s.s. comments. Thanks.

I dug up this blurb from the El Camino Wiki article:

"After 1984, GM shifted El Camino production to Mexico for three more years. Production ceased after the 1987 model year, as sales of the Chevrolet S-10 true pickup truck were outselling its passenger car counterpart.

1985 to 1987 El Caminos (and its twin, the GMC Caballero) were produced in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. Around 200 unsold 1987 El Caminos were sold as 1988 models."

Personally, I think GM may breathe new life into the old El Camino as it and the other Big Three have been releasing oldschool versions of America's favorite musclecars such as the Challenger, Camaro, Mustang, etc. The El Camino had/has a fairly big cult following and it wouldn't surprise me if GM brought it back.

Essentially a chevelle malibu station wagon add a short truck bed and back window. Weight carring and cost of production and corporate discisions killed the speciality trucklet. I owned one of the ugliest 1973 El Camino two tone blue. Plagued with rusting under the rear window chrome flooded spair tire well behind the seat there was not as much quality in those days.
