That has been a myth from the time that I was a kid. No, it is not illegal, but why would you want to? They do nothing but good. Did you know that the Preying Mantis has been considered the most efficient predator of any creature. Once it has you in it's sight, you are as good as dead. It does not miss. That is not to say that it does not have dangers. Birds, ants, etc. all prey on the Praying Mantis. Although ants are not very particular about what they kill, so an unsuspecting Praying Mantis is just as vulnerable as any other creature.
I have been bitten by a Praying Mantis, albeit, it was a long time ago, but the way I remember it, it was extremely painful, much worse than a Horse Fly.
The Praying Mantis is one of my faves of the insect world!!!!!

i haven't heard of any law prohibiting the killing of a praying mantis. and since they're off the endangered zone, i don't think there'd be any law (just yet) as far as the subject goes. this doesn't mean however that we may just go on a killing spree - especially when it comes to non-harmful insects like the praying mantis :)

That depends on your local laws. Generally it's only immoral to kill a praying mantis.

they are an endagered species and it is illegal. There are fines. It's 500$ in NC. You can get fined here just for touching them, never mind killing them. They're every where here though. Everywhere. I see them all the time. But yeah endangered and illegal to kill.

As far as I know theres no law against it and I do not think they are an endangered species so I would believe no.
But I would advise to not kill it as it probably takes care of pests around your house ; besides what has it done to you?

Nope, never been illegal to do it. But I guess your teacher told you that to discourage you from trying it in the first place. That's still kind of stupid though.
