RAOK means random act of kindness. And I mean something big, not like somebody gave you a dollar or opened a door for you or something that doesn't take too much effort.

For me the big one that comes to mind is when I got a flat tire at school one time, and I was having a really hard time getting the nut off of the tire rim, and this guy came and helped me out. He was a really nice guy and without his help I could have easily stayed there for another hour or even more.

Just this last sunday. I grow a BIG garden of Vegetables, I had 27 different things in there. As stuff gets ripe and ready to pick, I advertise in our local freecycle that I have veggies to give away. Another lady and her hubby who don't have hardly any money responded and I gave them a big bag full of 9 different things to take home and enjoy.

I took a chance on a 24 yr. old. Story: Mid morning I hear a loud crash. A cyclist's brakes failed at a stop sign situated across the street from my driveway. He swiped into the side of my older car, went through the garage door that was closed; came to a stop when he hit the back wall of the garage, pushing the wall 3" off the foundation. I WAS SHAKEN when I realized what had just happened. He layed there dazed for a while; badly bruised, new bike totaled.
He pleaded with me not to call police or ambulance... really tough call. Anyway, here's what happened. I insisted he had to get checked out at E.R. Thank God nothing was broken. He told me he was getting married in a month and another mark against him, he would lose his insurance, not be able to drive, lose his job. He said he would make good on all the damages. Wise choice? I had teens so I wondered what was right, decided to trust.
Right away he replaced the garage door, putting it on his credit card. Didn't hear from him or see him for a month, figured .. let him have his honeymoon. Another couple wks. went by and he came by with the cash for the car repairs and asked if his carpenter friends could do the repair of the garage. Hubby and I agreed IF they would do an acceptable job. A couple of months went by before he could get the crew together. I'm happy to say they did an alright job. I'm also proud that we gave a young man a break and that the story had a happy ending.

As an unpaid volunteer ambulance officer, the last couple of years I have put myself on roster 24 hours a day in a community populated by approx 2000, with an influx of holiday tourists, this works out to a significant amount of times to lock up shop, leave the kids with sitter and go to work.
We have no part time or permanent officers on the books, we rely exclusively on volunteer input, and with only two qualified personnel, our resourses are stretched.
My pager can go off at any given time, a call 3 in the morning is not unusual, in fact anytime someone calls ambulance I will get a page.
I find that I am now committed to my voluntary efforts, not only because no one else has time or lacks an interest in unpaid professions, but because I do enjoy helping people.

You know the coin star at big grocery stores, where you can cash in all your change? well my 8 yr. old and I loaded up and brought our pounds of coins to get the cash for something special. I used ziplock freezer bags, we had two. Before we got to the entrance, close but still in the moving taffic of the parking lot, a bag burst, man change went every where, it was so embarrasing, we literally stopped traffic trying to pick it up. A sacker guy ran in the store and brought out a coffee can and started helping me, so did a cashier from the store and a customer going in. There were 5 of us including my daughter. At first I was nervous someone would be pocketing
alot, but considering how appreciative I was for them to help and be so nice about it I didnt care. I dont think one cent was
taken, it wouldnt of mattered I was so very grateful, I think I cashed in about 118.00 for my daughter that she had been saving a long time for a special item. Looking back I should have gave those people something, but maybe they got the satisfaction of doing avery good deed. I know I learned there are good people there, I will return the kindness for sure, and I learned not to use freezer bags. Thats my story.

My hubby and I were at the movies the other day and I was washing my hands in the bathroom...an older girl, was right in front of me as we both headed for the door..she swung the door open HARD and at the very same time, a little girl, about 5 or 6, was heading into the bathroom. The door swung so hard it knocked her against the wall! She started crying and crying and I kept askign her where her parents were, she wouldnt answer me..I got worried..she finally said she was with her daddy and I took her by the hand out to the lobby to look for her father. I was determined to stay with her til we found him...needless to say he was standing right there...didnt seem too concerned....

my RAOKs aren't really random, but what i often do is DJ for benefits in my community for free. the latest was 2 weeks ago. i was sceduled to play for 6 hours, but when the band that had also volunteered did NOT show up, i ended up doing 14 1/2 hours STRAIGHT. i was exhausted, but it was worth it in my eyes.
one of my P&S buddies lives in rain soaked Texas, and we were just talking about donating some goods to those who are flooded out of their homes. we may raise a campaign right here on P&S if either of us can find time.

i gave a raok last week during the heat wave. a policeman was directing traffic in the blazing sun in his full black uniform. my 9 year old suggested we go buy him a bottle of water. we drove to the store bought a big bottle of cold water and drove it back to him at the intersection. he was so grateful and we felt good about doing something nice for someone else.
