An LP is a full-length record. It usually has five or six songs on each side. An EP is a shorter record, usually with two or three songs on each side.

LPs and EPs came out at about the same time, in the 1950s.

An EP is a collection of music that is too long to be a single, but too short to be an album - EP stands for extended play. A single usually has around 3 tracks, and an album has more than 8. EPs come in between with 4-7 tracks, and it is becoming more fashionable for bands to release EPs instead of singles nowadays. It's also the measure of the length of time the record would last, a single around 10 minutes, an EP around 10-25 and an album between 25 and 80.

An LP is a "long playing" vinyl record, either 10 or 12 inches in diameter, which most music was released on until the CD and tapes replaced it.
