I don't know if "cowardice" is the right word, but definitely insecurity in their own selves, as well as fearfulness of that which is intimately unknown. Cowardice is defined as "inaction due to fear", therefore, it doesn't exactly fit, because the racism is the reaction to the fear (which is in itself an action).
Just to be clear, I do find that racism is repulsive, and that people should have more self-confidence than they do. It is not the diversity of differing peoples we have here that should diminish us, but rather that should make us stronger. It is like this "Declaration of Principles" from my favorite TV show "Babylon 5" (Modified from the sci-fi root to one that applies here, of course. I changed the names of races and languages.) says:
The Universe speaks in many languages, but only one voice.
The language is not English, or French, or Spanish, or Chinese, or Swahili.
It is the Language of Hope.
It speaks in the language of trust.
It speaks in the language of strength and the language of compassion.
In the language of the heart and the language of the soul.
But ALWAYS, it is the same voice.
It is the voice of our ancestors, speaking through us, and the voice of our inheritors, waiting to be born.
It is the small, still voice that says: "We are one. No matter the blood, no matter the skin, no matter the economy, no matter the country, We are one. No matter the pain, no matter the darkness, no matter the loss, no matter the fear, We are one.
Here, gathered together in common cause, we agree to recognize this singular truth:
We are one.
And this singular rule: That we must be kind to one another, because each voice enriches us and ennobles us, and each voice lost diminishes us.
We are the Voice of the Universe,
The Soul of Creation,
The Fire that will light the way to a better future.
We are One.
We ARE...
ONE.
Hope this helps...

Yes, I agree - racists are definitely cowards. They only want to spread stereotypes about the race they're hating on. They generally don't want to try to find out about the other race, because they are so cowardly and only want to stay like that.
A lot of racists are also what you can call fai-weather bigots. They'll pretend to be open-minded and fair people when it's convenient for them, but the moment that it's a little trouble for them to stand up for what's right, they'll become racists and bigots again.

I do feel that racists are cowards The term racists means you are prejudiced. That word comes from the word prejudge, which means that even before you know about someone, that person has made a value judgement. It becomes cowardly because the racist person can't even begin to think another person of another race might be more alike than different to them. In the grand scheme of things. People are generally the same more than they are different. Cultures might be different, but most of us want the same things. Love, security and to be accepted.

I think that there are so many contributing factors as to why one would be racist. I think cowardice is definitely a component. However, I think ignorance takes center stage with racist or bigots. Humans and animals tend to fear and even dislike what they do not understand. Also, if prejudice is passed like a baton from generation to generation, it is difficult to pin point just what the cause of it is. America especially, embraces racial stereotypes and reinforces them with the media and popular culture. Many of the ideas people have about race are gleaned from an episode of "Mind of Mencia" or "The Cosby Show", News at 11 and MTV. There is just an appalling and utter lack of understanding of the mosaic of cultures that make up our country.

ignorance a lot of the time is racisms root..
sometimes i notice that racism seems to be mistaken.. and it can be the perception, that sees racism that isnt necessarily there..
where its genuine and its sick and with mallice... then its just pure evil, but normally less well educated (i mean worldly) people who are generally inbread, and scared to be outside their comfort zone...
it is sad...
someone said to me yesterday... that they were brought up to think this:- dont do to others, what you wouldnt want done to you... which is the same really as your saying above...
if you woulndt like it, then dont do it...
sometimes its a power thing, controlling thing... and because they can...
but its the inferiorith complex too..
its not nice... any kind of abuse that is based on someones physical appearance, be it skin colour, breeding etc, is cowardess... and cruel....

They are cowards.
I saw one here on this site acting tough saying "I'm racist. Send me a message if you have any problem with it". I did and not once did he reply back. He basically replied back to nobody. These idiots can only hide themselves and say these kinds of things or gather into groups and go bully an individual. They're a coward. They're also very childish as well.

I concur. Racism is an evil scourge that must be eradicated. All peoples of good will must continue to see that the great work of racial pioneers such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, (Malcolm-X) and the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan are continued. That their quests for racial justice are realized. Along with this, whites must repent for the atrocities they have committed; in the Americas; North and South; as well as the Caribbean. And reparations must be paid to the predecessors of the enslaved African peoples in the Western Hemisphere, as well as the Native Indian peoples in North and South America. After all of this is done, all races can live together in peace and harmony, as other "less intelligent" animals have been able to do since this planet was created.

I commend you for bringing this to the forefront, but what I see and I'm a white male, is that the bigotry and hate comes mostly from dumb white males, secondly white females. Then I see a great deal of defense from people of color, namely Black people (as that seems to be where most of the hate is directed at unbelieveably, yet sickeningly) and when they complain their accounts get deleted. I see the nasty racist comment linger on the post forum for a long time.
I think that the ones moderating this forum are white trash. That's quite obvious and coming from me a white male, I can say that and did! This is ridiculous. I am ashamed of my own race on account of these racist slobs. The white racist losers on this forum are an embarrassment to me personally.
