even if you get rid of fruit the'll still linger. One thing is they hate the cold and coould die, so have a fun blowing in your kitchen.
another drastic measure is cover your dishes, etc. with newspaper and spray the whole place with bug spray that "raid stuff".
And last i think this may be the best solution, light one of those candles that deter bugs, they contain the chemical, i forgot what it was called, serinella?
good luck.

At this time of year they probably aren't gnats, they are fruitflies. It's easy to tell if they are fruitflies, they have bright red eyes. Now you're wondering how the heck you're supposed to check. If you look at one while it's on a surface you'll be able to see the eyes very easily. You're first defense is to clean the sink drain, they like to breed there. Any drain cleaner will do, but since you're expecting get someone else to do it for you. Also, check the sewage drain in your home. Make sure there is no standing water (soaking dishes, milk glasses, etc.). Also, make sure that any bread products that are out are sealed completely. They get into even the smallest gap in bread ties! Don't leave wet sponges on the sink after you've cleaned. Keep your fruit in sealed containers or in the fridge until you get rid of the little buggers. The easiest and fastest way to get rid of them completely is to use an insect fogger from the hardware store. It will require the home to be empty of people and pets for a minimum of three hours and another hour for airing the house out. Again, get someone else to do it for you. When you return home, vaccuum everything (empty the canister or bag) and wash all counters and surfaces. That should take care of them.

Wash all fruit when you bring it home from the store, as gnats lay eggs on it, even bananas. Store all fruit in the refrigerator, if possible, or in a covered container. For the gnats you currently have, get a container with a small neck, like a coke bottle, put about 2 inches of vinegar, 2 teaspoons sugar, and 1/2 tsp dishwashing liquid. They will be drawn to the citrus/vinegar scent, will not be able find their way back out of the bottle, and once in the liquid, will not be able to get out because of the surface tension the dishwashing liquid adds.

Keep fruit and vegetables in the refrigerator, make sure you have screens on your windows and doors so additional bugs don't fly in, take your trash out daily (they could be laying eggs in your trash), run fresh water down your drains daily and add about a quarter cup of bleach down them once a week in case they are laying eggs in the standing water in the drains and don't leave standing water anyplace in your home even the water in any indoor plants could be harboring the eggs and larva so if you can, take all indoor plants outdoors or water less often and dump any water that runs out of the pot into the saucer.

i learned a couple of years ago that what look like fruit flies may be drain bugs, they build nests nests in your drains, to get rid of the nests pour baking soda down your drain followed by viniger, this will foam up and get rid of the nests. good luck.
