Paris and New York are both very fashionable cities but that doesn't mean you need to go crazy with couture or anything like that.
Paris is much more casual than people tend to think. You will definitely see Parisians wearing jeans, t-shirts, simple styles, all the clothes you see in North America. Since you're going in summer, pack light-weight clothing as it'll be quite hot. In France, shorts aren't as popular though, they're seen more as workout wear rather than everyday wear but nobody will even look twice if you wear them. Remember, Paris is a tourist city and they're used to seeing people wearing all kinds of things.
Really, anything goes; but if you want to be trendy, try white skinny denim, wide-legged pants, cotton scarves, ballet flats, Petit Bateau t-shirts, patterned summer dresses... things like that.
Paris has plenty of really unique clothing shops and one-off boutiques, so don't worry about fitting it before you go. Style is individual.

Thrift stores might be your answer.
You want a selection of clothes that FIT, that are not too tight or too baggy.
Look for clothes in colors that mix and match in fabrics that wear well and don't wrinkle.
1. A plain black skirt in light polyester/ spandex blend.
2. Plain black pants with no pleats.
3. A pair of really good jeans that fit well.
4. A good t-shirt to wear under something else.
5. a "little black dress" that's just right.
6. A really good pair of loafers style walking shoes.
7. A really good pair of black heels.
There's your starting wardrobe basics. Good luck and have fun!

Wear dark straight cut jeans (everyone sells those) and stock up on white shirts, the button front kind, and a few prime T shirts. A nice summer jacket for evenings, like a cotton cropped trench, and nice mid-heels. But people aen't nearly as fashionable on the whole in NYC and Paris as everyone is led to believe.

You can't lose with H&M clothes. A lot of Europeans really like American clothes: They just don't like how obnoxious some Americans act, so I would just keep it low key. Then you can wear whatever you want: Try some vintage clothes.

I live in NY an I have been to France. Ok, for both countries, try wearing black skinny jeans with a flowy top, that does not show to much skin!

Depends on the weather to be honest, I was in Paris at the start if May and it was hot! Everyone is into Crocs over there or footless tights and t-shirt dresses.
