If you're talking about a television anchor, no they don't have the right to refuse.

In general, a producer or executive producer has the final say over what is in a particular news show, and that producer reports to a news director. (At some small-market stations, the anchor may be the producer of the show, so then they would have more of a right to refuse.)

Most smart TV news producers do take the objections of their anchors quite seriously. It is, after all, the anchor's name and face out there, which means the public will hold the anchor responsible for missteps, not the faceless producer behind the scenes.

Usually an anchor and producer reach a compromise before disagreement over a story escalates.

OK... Paris Hilton is NOT news. She is a spoiled brat throwing a tantrum about having to take some responsibility. I think the news lady did the right thing by not reading the story. There are way more important things that need to be said to the public than Paris getting released from jail.

The right? No.

However, he or she can express an opinion to a supervisor, saying "I don't think this is news." A decision goes from there. Editors make bunches of decisions every day along these lines.

You can go "to the wall" on a story like Paris Hilton, saying I absolutely refuse to read this, knowing that unemployment might follow. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. There are fewer such disagreements than you might think, and usually they don't escalate.

No, because the newsreader is paid to read the news, not censor it. The whole thing sounds silly to me. I don't know Paris Hilton, therefore I don't get upset about anything she says or does.

Why is this in news? I don't get it. Celebs are NOT news material unless they are doing something more worthwhile than putting themselves in jail. Such as, oh I dunno, giving a crap about that freakin war going on?!?
