They're generally called the brass and woodwind instruments. They both use a vibrating column of air inside a pipe. Some of them (such as the saxophone or clarinet) use reeds to generate the vibration. Others (such as the flute and pipe organ) use air blowing across a hole to generate the vibration. The brass instruments (trumpet, trombone, French horn, etc.) use the lips in place of a reed.

The most common is the air guitar. Sometimes I play an air cello or an air bass fiddle. My brother plays an air trumpet when he gets about half drunk.
