A horse is pulling a heavy cart up a hill. The cart has 400 kg of mass inside it. The horse is pulling the cart with 10 N of force. What is the magnitude of the force on the horse due to the cart?

According to Newton's third law, forces always come in pairs, equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.

If the horse is exerting a 10 N force forward on the cart, the cart is therefore exerting a 10 N force backwards on the horse.
