I am personally fond of Casablanca, but for technical terms, The Godfather, probably beats it. It is certainly more complex than Casablanca.

However, the complexity of The Godfather is something that does not make it my favorite movie.

I am not saying that complexity is bad. I am saying that watching Godfather demands more than Casablanca. It's longer and slower paced, in many ways.

So, for sheer excellence and stellar entertainment per minute, I go with Casablanca. It is like having the perfect meal. It's not too long, but long enough to enjoy every moment. It's also short enough to be able to have that meal again and again and again.

So, I find Casablanca to be my favorite movie and it is probably the greatest, but a compelling argument can be made for The Godfather. I can think that maybe The Godfather is the greatest (I remember being blown away by it when I saw it) but is not my favorite, whereas Casablanca is my favorite but not the greatest. But, if one goes by emotional connection, I'd have to pick Casablanca.

It's a debate of the old Hollywood and the advent of the New Hollywood. If one wants to be diplomatic, Casablanca is definitely the greatest movie pre-1970 and The Godfather is definitely the greatest movie post-1970.

I often ask myself this. And I always come back to The Royal Tenanbaums.

A beautifully constructed frame of characters, with witty dialogue and great music.
