I have a friend who had shorts on that were two sizes two big for her on and she had to hold them up with a belt. I thought it was a skirt from the side but when I saw they were shorts, I said, "Oh, for a minute there I thought that was a skirt." She got all mad and started saying her mom was basically poor and practically all her clothes come from Salvation Army and the big shorts were twenty-five cents. I started to say that I thought buying used clothes is actually kind of cool (because it actually is) but she said to drop the subject and now she's really mad. What should I do?

Tom B - I actually own almost all secondhand clothing myself and I've only bought a little bit of clothes from brand stores.

Your friend just wants the subject dropped because she's so embarrassed to dwell on the fact that she has clothes from the Salvation Army. Most teens would be.

The next time you're together and she's not mad at you or anything, you can talk about it in a serious way. But you need to bring it up and say you wanted to apologize and that you really don't care where she gets her clothes. Good time is when you're wrapping up a homework session or something and no one else around.

Maybe if she's cool with it and if you are as well, both can go to the Salvation Army and pick out clothes that DO fit.

Second-hand stores are a great source for people on a budget. It's one of the biggest cultures in San Francisco. The Good Will has a big @ss store that totally looks like a department store inside. I have yet to shop there.

I grew up poor and had to go through wearing second-hand donations and everything. But even as an adult who's not poor, I'm still doing it because it saves big bucks on lots of stuff.

There are plenty of clothes that look pretty good. "Gently used" are most. But you might spot a thing or two that's new looking. If you get something "gently used", looks like you've owned it for quite a while - even better.

Good luck!

P.S. These stores are great source of costumes for Halloween - only a few months away. You can cut and sew cool costumes for less than $10. How can you beat that!!

I think your friend might be embarassed because that's the only place her mom can afford to shop. Apologize again, if the time seems right, if not, don't bring it up. Offer to go there with her sometime and look around.

Personally, I think second hand shopping is the best way to go. The shorts I have on came from a resale shop (I don't like resale/consignment shops as well, because they're generally for profit businesses) and my shirt is from a rummage sale. Tomorrow, I'm going to hit a couple of thrift stores in search of maternity clothes because I could really use another pair of shorts and the jeans and kahakis I found at rummage sales (only $1 each) are too big.

Anyway, I hope I've helped.

Wait until she's had time to cool off and then offer an apology. If you said that in front of others, it may have humiliated her terribly. Let her know that you value her friendship and that your sorry if you hurt her feelings. You sound like a cool friend, but sometimes poverty is really hard on a young person. Good luck. 2D

Trust me she'll cool down soon enough, guaranteed oh and by the way you don't have to say it's cool to buy second hand clothes to be all p.c.
