Do not keep any rough or sharp edged ornaments or plastic plants in their tank, nor should you keep fin-nipping fish with them. As simple as that. Live plants are nice because they are soft and can not tear their fins.

Ripped fins can come from a variety of reasons. One, other fish or sharp hard items i the tank can cause this problem. If you have this situation, just remove the decor or other fish.

Strong water currents can also rip fins. If your fish is in a filtered aquarium, try turning the flow rate on the filter down just a little.

Ammonia can also cause a bettas fins to split. Be very sure you are keeping your fish in an ammonia free environment. The best way to do this is keep him in a filtered aquarium. If he's in a container with no filter, change the water every 2-3 days to keep the ammonia down to an acceptable level.

make sure that you are doing regular partial water changes, if there is no filter than about once a week and make sure you only feed him once a day what he will eat in a 3 minute period. but if there is a filter on the tank than do a partial water change about every three to four weeks. and also make sure to keep any rough ornaments or plants
