I agree, you should be able to, but with television, the cost of adds are high. And studies show that television adds, are now the greatest tool for a candidate. Without them, you stand literally know chance at winning.

Unfortunately the political offices have been taken away from the people and put under the control of party bosses. The leadership of the party decides who makes the ballot and with the present restriction in many states that the people can only vote for the people of their party the little guy never has a chance. Now and then some get a chance by selling out but mostly all the federal level positions are sold at auction in back rooms instead of voted in by the people. I used to think Russia was bad but they saved money by only having one party control things. We have to waste money because of the two party system.

Because of big money which is supplied by big business you have to be very wealthy or have a group of very wealthy friends which are usually business men to support someone for president. Campaigns can run in to the millions or even billions of dollars to get a canidate on the ticket to run for president. About all us poor folks can do is go to the polls and vote on election day.

There is no formal rule -- but like attracts like.

Wealthy people have the resources to start the campaign, and the connections to get other big spenders. Much of a politician's career is about building those connections, which is why the only people who run who aren't already wealthy are career politicians.

Well the idea is that if you are good at politics (speak well and have good and workable policies) people will give you money so you will become friendly to their cause or interest.

In reality people with lots of money start off with a large advantage.
