I'm about to request that Abbey bank return my last 6 years of charges to me. I've followed the 'Which.com' guide and the letters ready with figures. How successful can I expect to be?

You have an excellent chance of getting all your charges back. There have only been a few cases lost so far, and there have been reasons for these losses, if you follow the standard procedure correctly you shouldn't have a problem.

Have a look at my site below, which has detailed step by step guides to the whole claims process, along with template letters and spreadsheets. It also has the latest bank charge news and developments, and forums for one to one help and support throughout your claim.

So far the site has helped many people claim back thousands of pounds from a range of banks and building societies.

The site is free to use!

if you have followed the guide lines for writing the letters then you will recieve your money.

i did this for my father.

he did have to issue a county court against them,

they countered and put in a defense,

he was told to attend court

they never turned up so my father was awarded money for all the charges plus the interest.

you have to be very careful if you are claiming interest aswell as if any of your figures are wrong your total will be wrong and then you will more than likely get nothing and have to start the proccess again.

My father has now been paid and they have not closed his account, although he has now moved to Natwest anyway.

hope this helps.

if you are going to claim interest there is a calculator on www.moneysavingexpert.com which will do this for you.

JUST REMEMBER TO CLAIM THE CORRECT AMOUNT

Abbey are owned by Banco Santander in Spain so I don't know how successful you'll be, but there's no harm in trying. I don't advise anyone to be with Abbey, especially for Insurance. Took them 12 months to send someone to repair my garage door which had come off the roller.

Good luck getting ANYTHING back from Abbey.

Here's some good advice: Close your Abbey account and open one with First Direct - the best bank in the world!

Follow the TIMESCALE to the letter.

DO NOT discuss ANYTHING over the phone (they will "forget" whatever was discussed and you will spend forever going over the same ground with a new person every time)

SEND vital paperwork Recorded Delivery (otherwise they will "loose" your docs and you will spend forever sending duplicates)

...

IGNORE all their offers until they pay up in full (typically you will receive all charges PLUS 8% interest back just BEFORE the small claims court hearing)

AND stick to the timescales (Dont enter into discussion about what docs they have lost or other material they "need" ... and especially ignore "we are dealing with your case" rubbish ... they will do ANYTHING to DELAY DELAY DELAY untill you give up and go away)

Abbey are fighting every body they possibly can. If you have a genuine claim (which it sounds like you have) then stick fiercely to your guns and you should get everything you are due.
I can't be bothered. I'm just changing banks instead.
Good Luck!

Not sure. Banks seem to be getting wise to this now and still awaiting the outcome of a case one refused to refund credit too. It's going through the courts. They may try to stall so be firm. Good luck.

95% sure, I hate the Abbey national, they are robbers. Stick to your guns and demand for the manager (loudly, so other customers can hear!) if they try to fob you off with less - good luck.
