He knew because he read the book. It was not a great translation to movie. In the book it's very clearly explained, but they kinda left out the details in the movie.

Because he put the puzzle together....and if you want to know more, read the book. It goes farther in depth and is a trillion times better. I was very disappointed in how Ron Howard did the movie. Don't want to see it again, but I'll read the book again.
