and yet terrorism has only increased. Isn't it obvious Bush doesn't know what the hell he's doing?
To me the answer on how to stop terrorism is quite straightforward. You can kill hundreds of terrorists each day, but if you don't attack the source, it's not going to make a difference. In fact, it would just add to the propaganda that is used to recruit terrorists.
In order to defeat terrorism, you need to attack its source: RIGHT-WING RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM / SOCIAL CONSERVATISM.
The reason the middle east is so backward is because they have religion in the government and prayer in the school. There is too much "traditional values" over there and not enough progressive values. These people get brainwashed into fundamentalism from day one: from the schools and the government.
The only solution to fundamentalism is LIBERALISM. That means secular schools, secular governments, humanism, feminism, rationalism, science, etc. How exactly you get this done is what is complicated

Well, you could get it done by conquering all those nations and ramming it down thier throats, I suppose. It's never worked before, but you could try it.
Liberal reforms are something that happen from within a society. If a society isn't so enclined to make such reforms itself, it's hard to impose, or even encourage them from without. If we'd waited for liberals to straighten out Nazi Germany, for instance, we'd have the National Socialist Union instead of the EU, today.
Absent that, the way to eliminate a funamentalist state based on hatred is to, well, /eliminate/ it. Kill all the people who make it up, grind thier infratstructure to dust, sow salt in the fields. Y'know, genocide. Hey, it worked on Carthage. That's one more success than you can chalk up to wishful thinking.

The Iraq war started in 1990. An official end of hostilities was never enacted, just a cease fire dependent on Hussein following of the charters laid out before him. He failled to abide by those charters so hostilities were continued. So by Jan 1994, it was already longer than WWII was for us. I was part of the first gulf war and remember the cease fire but it was not a well remembered time because we went from Desert Storm to Operation Southern Watch.

America has been at war with someone since WWII. Its good for the economy and big business and its helps to keep the population under control.
America had to have something to replace the Russians when the Cold War ended and caused enormous financial losses in the U.S. arms industry.

The war in Iraq has lasted longer than WWII. The War on Terror is an abstract and it will continue for a long, long time.

Now wait a minute. You're comparing Apples and Oranges. Combat to defeat the enemy and topple the gov't was much quicker than WWII.
Pacification is taking much longer.
Occupation - hell we're still occupying parts of Europe 60 years after WW2 ended.

Of course it has lasted more and it's not Bush's fault. The IRA was active for 100 years and that's what you can expect from a terrorist movement.

1st WWII didn't last so long because 6 million Jews were dead before FDR had the guts to go to war.
2nd Nazis didn't blow themselves up in coffee shops and police stations as the "insurgents" do.
3rd In WWII the media wore the uniform, now they hate the uniform, the flag and the commander in chief
Throw me something more challenging.

Terror is a tactic. You can't go to war with a tactic.
You are surprised it has lasted this long?
