In 1981, the Royals (20-30, .400) and Astros (28-29, .491) did, but that was a weird season. Both of them won the "second half" of the season to advance to the playoffs.

For the entire year, the Astros did finish over .500 (61-49, .555) but the Royals did not (50-53, .485), becoming the only non-winning team in major league history to earn a playoff berth.

But, again, that was a weird season.
