It's tougher than it used to be, but you can document your own time on your own boat. You'll need to have the registration proving you owned the boat during the time of experience and fill out the proper forms, attesting to your time at sea. Even 1 hr on a boat on a particular day qualifies for a day at sea. If you're claiming time on another person's vessel, you'll need a document from the owner or an officer of the owning company, attesting to your sea time, day by day. Faking it is perjury and lately the Coasties have been much more exacting in all the prerequisites for licensing.

You need to keep a log of all your time. If you can document time with a particular captain as first mate or second and he/she will sign or it ,you may be able to show some time that way. If you keep a daily log with weather, and destintion, events along theway, etc. it counts.
